Personal Note about Depression
I know many people who have taken their lives, even more this year. It’s particularly common in our queer, trans, visionary artist communities and people with traumatic brain injuries. There is NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. Some of the bravest souls I know have this experience. As Krishnamurti says, “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” Many of my close friends and I have experienced suicidal thoughts and are still here to talk about it. That means that we chose to live, even when we didn’t want to… we wanted, to want, to live. I want to take a moment to honor the power of that choice each time it is made, may this power accumulate, may our softness towards ourselves accumulate. Here are some of the things that supported me, may they support you and loved ones as well.
Call a national suicide hotline (if you’re in the U.S.) at: 1 (800) 273 - 8255
Call a warm line (peer emotional support) at: 1 (855) 845 - 7415
Some times just call each day as part of your self care to take the mystery out of it.
Perhaps the most vulnerable and valuable of all:
Make a list of 5 close friends you would feel comfortable calling when you can’t remember how much you want to live
ASK them if they’re willing to be on call in this way.
Make a group text thread so you can reach out to all of them simultaneously (taking the pressure off any 1 person.) This may have been one of the most courageous things in my life and my friendships have deepened tremendously from it, whether they said yes or no.
